Amphipolis – Ammolofoi

First Stop: Lion of Amphipolis  (1 hour and 15 minutes drive)

The discovery of the monument is connected to the modern history of Macedonia, as its first parts were initially found by Greek soldiers during the First Balkan War in 1912–13, when they cleared the bed of the Strymon River (where the stone from the base of the Lion was used in a dam in the Roman period or later) to build the modern bridge. Later, in 1916, British soldiers discovered significant parts of the monument while building fortifications on the bridge.

Second Stop: Amphipolis Archaeological Museum (10 minute drive / 45 minute guided tour)

The Archaeological Museum of Amphipolis is located in Amphipolis, Central Macedonia, Greece, and is located in the archaeological site of ancient Amphipolis (a city founded in 437 BC), near the Strymon River and very close to the Thessaloniki–Kavala national road. The museum exhibits finds from Amphipolis and its surroundings. The excavations were carried out mainly in the period 1956–1984, under the direction of the late archaeologist Dimitris Lazaridis. After his death in 1985, his daughter, Kalliopi Lazaridis, continued the work until 1989.

Third Stop: Ammolofon Beach / In case of bad weather, free time in the city of Kavala

(45 minutes to Ammolofon beach / 1 hour to Kavala)

Ammolofon beach is known for its wonderful view and sands. In case of bad weather, visitors will have free time in the city of Kavala. The return is via the old national road to enjoy the best view of Lake Volvi and Koroneia.
